The ribbon displays the actions users can take in a graphical and grouped representation. Further, the ribbon is contextual, meaning it displays actions that are relevant to each area of the application as users access them. Figure 12-14 shows the account grid ribbon for the Accounts grid. A deep examination of ribbon programming is beyond the scope of this book, but we do want to highlight the customization options for it in Microsoft Dynamics CRM. For full details and examples of ribbon functionality, please refer to the Microsoft Dynamics CRM SDK documentation. Microsoft Dynamics CRM contains default ribbons throughout the application that provide a baseline for customizations to each ribbon. You customize the ribbon by defining how you want it changed from the baseline. Microsoft Dynamics CRM then applies these changes at run time when the ribbon is displayed in the application. Microsoft Dynamics CRM provides RibbonDiffXml definitions for all ribbons in the application for you to customize. These elements are applied over the default ribbon definitions provided by Microsoft Dynamics CRM. Figure 12-15 shows the basic ribbon XML structure.

Given that PL/SQL is the Procedural Language extension for SQL, you would think that it supports and uses the same data types as SQL does for the database, right Right! It turns out that is almost the case, but not quite. PL/SQL can handle any database data type and also some data types of its own. Do you remember the Data Definition Language (DDL) section in 1 There, I talked about the three basic data types that you will use all the time: character (VARCHAR2), numeric (NUMBER), and time (DATE). Here s how those types work in PL/SQL: VARCHAR2: Just as in the database, most of the time, you ll work with character strings in PL/SQL using the data type VARCHAR2. However, unlike the database VARCHAR2 type, a PL/SQL VARCHAR2 can hold as many as 32,767 characters, whereas the database type holds up to 4,000. NUMBER: Just as in the database, most of the time, you ll work with numbers in PL/SQL using the data type NUMBER. And, just like the database, PL/SQL has additional numeric data types available. For example, you can use the type PLS_INTEGER, which has an integer range from 2147483648 to 2147483647. PLS_INTEGER also uses the computer s hardware to do its calculations instead of library routines, so it s faster. However, until you re comfortable writing stored procedures with PL/SQL, I don t think you need to bother with them. You can always take a look at them in Oracle s PL/SQL User s Guide and Reference in case you think, He s messing with me.

DATE: Just as in the database, most of the time, you ll work with dates and times in PL/SQL using data type DATE. Like NUMBER, PL/SQL has additional time-related data types. Check them out in Oracle s reference once you re up and coding confidently. PL/SQL also has a BOOLEAN data type that allows you to store the logical values FALSE or TRUE (you find it irritating when I say false and true instead or true and false, don t you ) in a variable. SQL has no equivalent. So you can pass BOOLEAN values between methods and use them as variables in your PL/SQL program units, but you can t store them in the database. Of course, there are many more Oracle SQL and PL/SQL data types, but the ones we just covered are the ones you ll use most often.

To update a ribbon with your changes, you need to reference the definitions of the default ribbons. For example, if you want to hide the Convert Lead button in the Leads ribbon, you need to know the unique identifier of the Convert Button element to remove it. You can find the identifier in the baseline ribbon XML for the Lead entity. Because you need to reference the definitions to customize the ribbons, it s important that you understand the current ribbon definitions in the system. The Microsoft Dynamics CRM SDK provides a couple of tools to assist you with this exercise. First, you can access the default ribbon definitions in the SDK\SampleCode\CS\Client\Ribbon\ExportRibbonXml\ ExportedRibbonXml folder.
